For over 70 years, the Don Bosco Centers has continuously evolved its outreach, scope and programs to meet the needs of the Northeast Kansas City community. The organization is currently undergoing a strategic planning process to define its direction for the next three to five years. While the refining process of the new strategic plan is still in progress, several key initiatives have already emerged in Don Bosco's quest to prepare for the future.

A Capital Campaign

Don Bosco is implementing a needs assessment to better understand its capacity and limitations, and plan for a possible capital campaign. Many of Don Bosco’s facilities have gone without significant repair for over twenty years. As a result, the organization’s buildings require investment in updates to effectively deliver services and programs. In addition, some of the organization’s Centers have outgrown their space. Expansion of these facilities or relocation is crucial to Don Bosco’s ability to grow its services and programs to meet the community’s ever-changing needs. The needs assessment will also examine all of Don Bosco’s programs to ensure it is operating effectively and efficiently, and identify areas of growth for the organization.

A Greater Focus on Self-Sufficiency

Don Bosco’s mission is to “empower individuals and families to achieve self-sufficiency and independence through a comprehensive network of services and programs designed to enhance the quality of life in the ethnically rich and culturally diverse Northeast Kansas City community.” The Don Bosco Centers has increasingly focused on moving clients from dependency on the organization’s programs and services to independence and self-sufficiency through initiatives like the successful Work Empowerment Program.

Continued Fiscal Responsibility

The Don Bosco Centers has made great strides toward minimizing expenses and increasing revenues to achieve a break-even budget instead of operating at a deficit. This level of fiscal responsibility will sustain Don Bosco through financially lean times. Through the organization’s proactive efforts to diversify its funding stream, cultivate new donor relationships, build a reserve, and more effectively engage corporate sponsors and volunteers, leadership is working to ensure that Don Bosco continues to serve the community.

The future of The Don Bosco Centers is bright, but can only be achieved with the continued support of donors, corporate partners, funders, volunteers, and in-kind contributors. Learn more about how you can help.
