Alex Nigro Cultural Center Building Dedication
June 20, 2008, 6-8 p.m., 526 Campbell Ave., KCMO
In the fall of 1939, residents of the Columbus Park neighborhood in Northeast Kansas City came together to build the Don Bosco Community Center as a safe place for their children. This summer, Don Bosco will return to its roots by renaming its original building after one of its founding fathers, Alex Nigro, Sr.
Nigro was instrumental in Don Bosco’s early years. He served as the organization’s first president, and remained in that leadership position for many years. Under his leadership, the foundation was laid for Don Bosco to grow into the comprehensive organization it is today. Even after his tenure as president, Nigro served on Don Bosco’s Board of Directors, and donated his time and resources to the mission of Don Bosco.
On Friday, June 20, 2008, The Don Bosco Centers will rename the building located at 526 Campbell the Alex Nigro, Sr. Cultural Center. Don Bosco’s English as a Second Language Center will continue to occupy the building, providing free English classes to over 300 students a day. The Alex Nigro, Sr. Cultural Center will also hold the organization’s archives and serve as a cultural connection to the neighborhood’s Italian heritage. The event will include wine, hors d’oeuvres and a short ceremony.
Your presence at this event is our honor, however a financial contribution at any of the following levels will leave your legacy on Kansas City’s Northeast community. Your tax-deductible donation will be used to maintain the Cultural Center and help Don Bosco deliver vital programs and services in the Northeast. Tax credits may be available, call 816-691-2902 for info.
