Don Bosco English as a Second Language School
Learning English is a considerable challenge for many new Americans, and for some, it can seem almost impossible. However, without the knowledge of English, people feel isolated and oppressed. Opportunities for employment are severly limited. Barriers are present with everyday activities that range from shopping to seeking medical attention. Learning English can be difficult, but Don Bosco's English as a Second Language (ESL) Center helps break the barriers by offering seven levels of classes, each designed for different levels of proficiency.
The students come from many countries, including Bosnia, Guatemala, Honduras, Iraq, Mexico, Russia, Somalia, Sudan and many others. Last year, Don Bosco ESL students represented 77 different countries. Don Bosco's ESL School is the largest Adult ESL program in Kansas City.
ESL is offered through a partnership with Penn Valley Community College. Students are tested at registration to determine their level of proficiency, and then enrolled into an appropriate class. The curriculum is designed to not only teach the language, but also aspects of American daily life, culture and traditions.
Don Bosco is committed to investing in Kansas City by teaching English to our culturally diverse population, helping to build upon the many skills of New Americans, and giving each one a mean of utilizing those skills. These opportunities don't just benefit the individual, but the Greater Kansas City metropolitan area as a whole.
