New Media Center to Expand Learning Opportunities

More than ever, students at the Don Bosco Charter High School need a solid education that includes learning key skills, such as computer technology and reading, that will prepare them to enter the 21st Century workforce. In 2007, Don Bosco embarked upon an effort to transform the school's small book collection into a comprehensive Media Center and Library.

With the support of major funding partners like The Greater Kansas City Community Foundation, Humana, CitiCards, Forster-Powers Charitable Trust, and Henry Wurst Family Foundation, the Don Bosco Charter High School will build the new library and computer lab in time for the 2008-2009 school year. A number of in-kind donations of books have also moved Don Bosco toward completing this goal, including a large donation of books from the Don Haarup Estate.

"Our students need the skills and education necessary to compete in today's job market, and we are actively seeking ways to provide them those skills," said Principal Bernadette Barber.

The new Media Center will not only feature an expanded selection of books and printed materials, but will also include a computer lab that teachers will be able to reserve for their classes, and that will be available for use in afterschool programs such as tutoring, college research and career exploration.

"We are developing a school that encourages our students to become life-long learners," said Barber.
